So
what do we expect now?
That seems to be the question I hear from a lot of people these days.
The consensus seems to be that there is no longer a question of if there
is a recession, but how long it will last, and for the construction industry,
how we will be impacted. One thing is becoming apparent – while
commercial construction is still relatively strong, especially in Colorado,
backlogs are getting lighter, continuing material cost escalation for
items like steel will continue to lead to delays and cancellations of
projects, and the continuing restrictions on the capital markets will
make fewer projects viable. The net result is likely to be a tighter market,
with more competition for all. So what does that mean for us as estimators?
Possibly some longer nights, and more bids with more bidders. In addition,
possibly more pressure to get the next job, at any cost. The ethical pitfalls
that often plague the construction industry are fed by the kind of increasingly
competitive market that is heading our way. It is easy to avoid bid shopping
when you aren’t in fear of losing your job or your company. Now,
more than ever, the 9 canons of ASPE are needed to help us all remember
that there are more important things than that next job – our reputations,
our belief in ourselves, and our trust in our fellow estimators –
in short, our long-term relationships with each other.
